Celebrating Diversity, Building Community in Christ

Come Join Us!

Mission Statement

Ellis Avenue Church seeks to grow in every way into Christ our head. Being brought together as a worshipping community from many diverse backgrounds, we are joined and knit into one body. Celebrating our multifaceted gifts and with each part working properly, we intend to build each other up in love and to share God's saving grace with our community and our world.

We are an autonomous Baptist Church supporting diverse mission efforts including those of the
Alliance of Baptists.

 Ice Skating In Chicago

Fellowship

Everyone knows about fun in the sun, but the fun doesn't have to end just because it's cold outside! For some kinds of fun, cold is essential, and as these warm smiles attest to, there's plenty of fun to be had on the ice!

 Welcome Justin!

General

Justin's been with us a while over the summer, so I'm a little late with an official welcome and blurb, so here it is! We're also having a luncheon this afternoon to welcome him.

Justin Howell was called to serve as Ellis Avenue Church's interim pastor on August 12. Hails from Mississippi, Justin holds a BA in Religion from William Carey University. an M.Div. in Theology from George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies at the University of Chicago Divinity School. He has previously served in youth and adult ministry with several congregations in Mississippi and Texas and brings to us great gifts in teaching, preaching, and community building.

 Amazing Grace Race

General

On Saturday February 24, the junior board of SCUPE (the Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education, www.scupe.org) hosts...

!!!!!THE AMAZING GRACE RACE!!!!!

- a team scavenger hunt around Chicago full of interesting destinations, intriguing clues, goofy tasks along the way, and a party at the end;

- proven to be more fun than mowing your lawn, doing laundry, going to the grocery store, or whatever else you would otherwise do on a winter Saturday afternoon;

- modeled on the BPS Amazing Race, but better - you'll be home for dinner;

- a chance for you to run around with your friends, family, foosball teammates, fellow volunteers, church high school or young adult group, or random people you pick out of the phone book;

- and a fundraiser for SCUPE.

How great, huh?

Basic details are this: 1) let me know you're interested - we need to keep it to a manageable size, so early RSVPs are good. 2) form a team of 3-5 people. 3) block out noon-5 pm on Feb. 24 on your calendar. 4) scrounge together the $100 donation/registrati on fee for your team. (you can do it - my friend just took her loose change in to the bank yesterday, and she had $57) 5) breathlessly await the forthcoming flyer which will say all this, but make it look cool.

If you want to take part but your friends are dweebs and won't go, let me know that too, and we can try to put teams together - you can make new non-dweeb friends!

Again, #1, let me know you're interested! Thanks! : ) Mark

 Happenings!

Fellowship

A lot has been happening at Ellis Avenue Church over the last several months! Back in April we went to our old stomping grounds at the Phantom Ranch for our first church retreat in a number of years. It was a good time to study, worship, and get to know each other better. The talent show was a lot of fun, and Martyr of the Year honors went to Alex Outlaw!

A couple of weeks later, it was time to put the men in the kitchen (where they belong) for the annual Mother's Day breakfast! Despite just a few cooking glitches, all survived and enjoyed. The Moms were thrilled!
