Neighborhood Ministries

Hyde Park Kenwood Interfaith Council Ellis is an active member of the Hyde Park Kenwood Interfaith Council (HPKIFC), the oldest such council in the United States (organized in 1911).   HPKIFC sponsors inter-religious dialogues, meetings on community issues and provides critical social services to the neighborhood.  The social services include the Hyde Park Kenwood Food Pantry (of which Ellis was the original hosting congregation) and the Hyde Park Kenwood Soup Kitchen (located just blocks from the church). SOUL – Southsiders Organizing for Unity and Liberation Ellis has had long-running participation in the church-based community organizing group Southsiders Organizing for Unity and Liberation (SOUL).  SOUL – composed of 19 member churches and organizations – works on issues of equity and jusitice for the residents of the south side of the city.  SOUL has historically worked on major social issues including education funding reform, green job creation, and transportation upgrades for the south side.

Worship At Ellis Avenue Church

At Ellis Avenue Church we recognize that worship is our primary corporate activity and therefore creating a meaningful, life-giving service remains the main focus of our congregation. We work hard at creating a warm and supportive worshiping environment and a worship service that reflects our very diverse congregation. As strong followers of the principle of the Priesthood of All Believers we also pride ourselves in providing ample opportunities for lay participation and involvement. Visitors are always welcome. Worship at Ellis Avenue Church begins at 11:00 A.M. (Central Standard Time).  There are two ways you can participate: You may join us for in-person worship at our building at 5001 S. Ellis Ave. in the Hyde Park/Kenwood neighborhood. A second way you may participate in our weekly worship is via Zoom.  Our Zoom worship services during the pandemic were widely embraced and it was particularly meaningful to connect with members of our church community that no longer reside in the Chicagoland area.  Therefore, we are committed to continuing to share our worship on Zoom for all who prefer to gather in this way.  To participate via Zoom simply email ellisavenuechurch@gmail.com to request the meeting link and password.  It is free and easy to use.     Dress for our in-person worship typically ranges from casual to business casual.  We encourage people to ‘come as they are’. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of every month.
